While officials state the exercise is not directed at any specific nation, it is seen as a demonstration of interoperability and collective strength in the Indo-Pacific, particularly amid ongoing strategic competition in the region.

For the next three weeks the dusty scrub of Shoalwater Bay, including the sea and air around it, will be an active war zone. It's always an exciting time for our personnel. We get to put into practice what we train hard to do. Australia's AUKUS partners from the United Kingdom and US make up the biggest numbers and bring in some of the biggest weapons. Our weapon systems are designed to shoot autonomously but of course we are stronger together. It's a chance to show off new capabilities like the recently acquired HIMARS weapon system and Blackhawk helicopter fleet. While 19 countries are involved, it's the first time operations will be carried out on the territory of our closest neighbour, Papua New Guinea, one of several Pacific nations contending with efforts by China to expand its reach and influence. We certainly don't orientate the exercise to any nation in particular, more it offers an opportunity for us to practice our interoperability. That's why exercises like this are as much a demonstration as they are a drill, conducted knowing full well that countries like China do watch on, just as we watch them, any time they head towards Taiwan. But it's also a combined show of strength aimed at deterring anyone from making the first move towards conflict in the Indo-Pacific. In partnering with both our regional and partner nations, we provide like minds in the application of our firepower. But if prevention ever fails, this preparation is vital.
