We've had a number of incidences in the last couple weeks that you just shake your head at. It's unbelievable. In this case, police say the attacks snaked through the city's downtown core in the early hours of August 31st. Unhoused men attacked. The man who died assaulted while he slept on a bench steps from City Hall. Unprovoked, they began violently beating this male. Again, one of them was armed with a hammer. The details of this case disturbing on their own but Toronto police say part of a wider trend of the 31 homicides in the city this year in a quarter of those cases the person charged under the age of 18. Just last week, a 16-year-old was arrested in the fatal shooting of an eight-year-old boy who was struck by a stray bullet in bed. The type of youth that we're working with today is not the same youth of yesteryear. Those who work with youth offenders point to the undeniable effect of social media. Where you can see something that perhaps would have shocked you five, ten years ago even and now it's kind of like whatever. I mean, it just kind of seems like everything is a movie even though it's real life. Also, a pervasive sense of impunity. In this case, both of the accused already on bail from previous charges. When we speak to young people, they are not afraid of consequences. They're definitely not interested in many of the social type of programs.
