Right now, that money is going towards a plan to widen the turnpike and create more lanes and more opportunities for those who drive on a regular basis. We're talking about the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension Improvement Program. The Turnpike Authority's plan to rebuild an 8-mile stretch of the I-78 extension. But again, it's not without its controversy. As a matter of fact, there was some strong debate here in Bayonne last night, sharing their opinions on both sides of this issue at Woodrow Wilson School. An $11 billion project that would double the number of lanes through Bayonne and Jersey City, as well as rebuild the Newark Bay Bridge, creating 25,000 jobs. That's something Bayonne's mayor supports. But Jersey City and other towns, including Newark and Hoboken, have expressed concern. And opposition is mounting from residents and environmental advocates as well. Now, construction is scheduled to start in 2026, following the approval of a $142 million design contract in August.
