Brooklyn Karasack, using her grandmother's sewing machine, leans into what she loves. This is one of the easiest thrift flipping projects ever. Thrifting, buying gently used goods and clothing, and sewing, this time turning an old pillowcase into a tote bag. This is probably $3, get that. The 28-year-old is an auditor by day. Let me show you what I got and what I'm going to do with it. But a social media sensation in her free time for videos documenting her wallet-wise designs. I think it would make a really cute purse. She has more than 800,000 online followers. I'm making a top out of an old pair of jeans that don't fit me anymore. Did you used to buy fast fashion? Yes, I did up until when I started thrifting. Since then, I haven't bought anything fast fashion. Fast fashion is clothing produced quickly, cheaply, and to stay on ever-changing trends. It's become a big contributor to textile waste, producing 92 million tons a year. A piece of clothing is worn only 7 to 10 times on average before being thrown out. For a new generation, sewing and thrifting is the answer. Not only a philosophy, but in anxious economic times, a necessity. You can do a zipper with a regular foot. And then there's a popularity. This sewing class in St. Petersburg is full, as are many thrift stores. With the trade war looming, thrifting is an easy way to avoid tariffs, with prices generally 50 to 75 percent off retail. The secondhand market is expected to more than double by 2028, growing more than six times faster than the broader retail sector. If you haven't been to one in a while, it's a whole new look. Thrift stores had stuff that the regular retail stores just didn't have. Kristen Hester manages an out-of-the-closet thrift store, which has 24 locations. You think of a small little charity shop where maybe everything is just kind of thrown around. You have to dig through dirty bins. Out-of-the-closet is nothing like that. It is more of a curated boutique experience. I'm mainly looking for a music festival that I'm going to. Brooklyn Karasak likes the elevated experience. These colors could go really well together.
