She had so many friends and so many gifts to give people and she was just starting her life. And to honor her memory her family created Megan's Rainbow of Hope, providing scholarships for high school and college students. Then came action as Megan's family worked tirelessly to make sure something like this never happened to another family. Now they're hoping to make Megan's way out state law. For Megan Kellerman's parents the one-year anniversary of Megan's tragic death meant remembering her for her kindness and big heart. Honoring her passion to help friends and at-risk youth and pushing for change through a potential new state law named Megan's way out. Let's do it let's let's make it happen that's why we want to do this and that's we're doing that's what Megan would have wanted that's what Megan would do you know that's what she would want. On August 14th of last year Megan was at a Stowe Taco Bell drive-thru when a stranger Jason Williams inexplicably slammed into Megan's car repeatedly got out of his SUV shot and killed Megan before taking his own life. Megan was trapped she was stuck she had no way out. Anyone could put themselves in my situation I was on the phone with her the entire time. As a father and for those who know me I would do anything for anybody I do anything to protect my family and I cannot protect my daughter Megan. State Senator Casey Weinstein is working to introduce a new state bill called Megan's way out which would require all new or renovated drive-thru businesses to have an escape bypass lane from those drive-thrus in the event of an emergency. It is not just a response to one tragedy it is a step toward preventing future ones and none of it would be possible without the strength and advocacy of the Kellerman family. The city of Stowe is not waiting for a state law in September an ordinance is expected to pass that would require a bypass lane on any new or modified drive-thrus. A Taco Bell which will be built in this area has agreed to build one. It's a terrible way to go ahead and have action take place but that being said you can rest assured that we started this in Stowe and we will follow through. Weinstein is looking for a co-sponsor of the bill he hopes to hold hearings in the fall with a goal of getting it signed into law next year. For the Kellermans that would mean Megan is still helping others even though she's gone. She left behind love and strength and she will help others and we want to honor her.
