Midwestern United States

A significant winter storm has swept through the Midwestern United States, dropping up to six inches of snow in the Chicago suburbs and bringing the seasonal total to over 17 inches since November 1st, the fastest accumulation since 1978. Hazardous road conditions were reported across Illinois, Iowa, Colorado, and other states, with additional snowfall affecting central Iowa and the mid-Atlantic region.

Winter storm warnings are in effect from Richmond to Roanoke, Virginia, with forecasts predicting up to six inches of snow in some areas. The Pacific Northwest is also experiencing its strongest atmospheric river of the season, leading to heavy rainfall and flood watches. Wind chills are expected to drop below zero in parts of the Northeast and western Great Lakes, with colder temperatures anticipated into the weekend.

We're going to begin today with a story you've heard before, a massive snowstorm, this one in the Midwest. And here's the thing, more bad weather is on the way. Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana got several inches of snow, creating a mess on the roads. This morning, another round of snow is hitting parts of the mid-Atlantic. Doesn't sound so great. CBS News meteorologist Rob Marciano is watching it all for us. A winter storm traveling through the Midwest over the weekend dumped up to six inches of snow in the Chicago suburbs. The total since November 1st, now more than 17 inches, and that's the fastest that's happened since 1978. And the snow left roads a slippery mess in other parts of the state, plus in Iowa and Colorado. It was miserable. Stopped on the interstate is not a good thing. This sedan spun out in the wintry conditions on Interstate 70 west of Denver. Truck drivers were forced to put on chains on Saturday. Ten new and counting. It's unreal. But the snow was a delight for skiers and snowboarders hitting the slopes on Copper Mountain with more than a foot of fresh snow. In central Iowa, about a half a foot of snow blanketed Iowa State University over the weekend. We've got some snow that's heading into parts of the mid-Atlantic today. So we want to show you that. Richmond back through Roanoke. We've got a winter storm warnings that are posted. And there you see the snow in our futurecast will last through much of the day today. So three to five in some cases, six inches of snow down there. And that's a lot for Virginia for sure. Wind chills tonight down to down in the teens and below zero. Many spots across the northeast and third of the country. And then Thursday morning wind chills below zero across parts of the western Great Lakes. So that trend is going to continue for sure. Meanwhile, in the snow's coming through this area, a couple of clipper systems. Green Bay back through Minneapolis northward, six to 12 inches of snow there. And an atmospheric river coming across the Pacific Northwest. This is the strongest of the season. Five to ten inches of rain coming. We've got flood watches that are posted through the week there. Potential flooding here in the northeast. Temperatures only dropping today, Tony. And will be even colder as we head towards the weekend. Be ready. All right, Rob. Thank you very much.
