Japan's meteorological agency has reported a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake off the northern coast near Hokkaido. Local tsunami alerts have been issued, warning of waves up to three meters (10 feet) high, though no warnings have been issued for the United States at this time.

The event has prompted comparisons to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which caused significant loss of life and economic damage. Authorities are monitoring the current situation closely as more information becomes available.

some breaking news for you at this hour. Japan's meteorological agency is reporting a powerful earthquake off the country's northern coast. Its website suggests the tremor measured 7.6 and struck off the coast of Hokkaido. Local tsunami alerts have been issued and warnings of waves of up to three meters or 10 ft high. So far there have been no warnings issued here in the United States. Obviously we're monitoring and we'll have the details as they come in. But of course we all remember the 2011 tsunami that happened off the coast of Japan. That earthquake was a 9.0 magnitude. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan. I remember being in the control room watching his video images came into us that evening waves of up to 130 ft. Uh and so it doesn't look like we're seeing anything near that right now. These are live pictures coming into the newsroom at this hour. But of course japan always on alert for tsunamis and the warnings of waves because it was a devastating tsunami that struck japan back in 2011. And you'll recall there were three nuclear reactors that were in great danger. I recall there were thousands of deaths, some 15,000 people died, 2500 people went missing. Uh the costs was almost incalculable uh in terms of the economic impact, something like $200 billion. It was one of the most, it was the costliest, one of the costliest natural disasters in recorded history. So of course anytime that there is an earthquake off the coast of japan and tsunami warnings are issued, we want to be alert, we want to bring you that news, which is what we're doing right now.
