A judge has ordered Brian Cole, the man accused of placing pipe bombs near Capitol Hill on January 5, 2021, to remain in jail while awaiting further hearings. Authorities had been searching for a suspect for nearly five years before Cole's recent arrest, which was first reported by CBS News.

Investigators reportedly linked Cole to the bombs through cell phone and purchase records. Cole faces two federal charges related to unlawful explosives, has not yet entered a plea, and is scheduled for another hearing in about two weeks.

A judge has ordered the man accused of placing the 2021 Capitol Hill pipe bombs to remain in jail pending future hearings in this high-profile case. Brian Cole faced a judge for the first time on Friday. CBS News broke the news of Cole's arrest Thursday morning. Authorities had been searching for a suspect for nearly five years. CBS News Justice Correspondent Scott McFarlane is in Washington with what we're learning about this high-profile case. Brian Cole's Friday court hearing was brief, just minutes. Cole has hired an attorney and will remain in jail pending a hearing in about two weeks. But CBS News has learned Cole has been speaking with investigators for hours already. Multiple sources tell us investigators believe Cole is a Trump supporter and is the person who placed two potentially deadly pipe bombs on Capitol Hill January 5, 2021, the night before the U.S. Capitol insurrection. The Department of Justice is still not answering questions about Cole's suspected motive or what connection, if any, he had with the riot by Trump supporters that injured more than 140 police. The bombs diverted officers when they were discovered at the very moment the mob breached the Capitol grounds. Court filings in the case say investigators linked Cole to the bombs through cell phone records which allegedly placed him near the scene January 5, 2021. The department also alleges purchase and credit card records show Cole bought some of the bomb components or components similar to those found in the bomb beginning in 2019. Cole faces two federal charges for unlawful explosives and has not yet entered a plea to the charge or made a statement about the case. For CBS Saturday morning, Scott McFarlane, Washington.
