At least eleven people are dead after a mass shooting at a shebeen (an unlicensed bar), in Saulsville, a township just west of South Africa's administrative capital Pretoria.

A mass shooting at an illegal shebeen in Salisbury Township, west of Pretoria, South Africa, resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people, including three children. The incident occurred when three suspects entered a hostel room where people were drinking and began shooting randomly, killing ten at the scene and one more, a three-year-old boy, who later died in hospital.

Fourteen others were hospitalized, and the deceased also included a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl. Police are still searching for the suspects and have not identified a motive. Authorities noted that illegal shebeens have been the sites of many violent incidents, and police have recently shut down thousands of such venues across the country.

We're tracking breaking news in South Africa. At least 11 people are dead, including three children, in a mass shooting in Pretoria. CBC's Linda Ward joins me now in studio with more on this. So, Linda, what more are we learning about this? Yes, so we're learning bits from the South African Police Service about just when this happened, how it happened, where it happened. I can tell you it happened at an illegal shebeen. This is sort of a speakeasy of sorts, located in a hostel in Salisbury Township, west of Pretoria. But police were only called, it happened at 4.15, police were only called at 6am. So an unlicensed sort of sale of alcohol location. There were many of these in South Africa, sort of a holdover from the days of apartheid. This police officer that spoke to local media on scene describes what happened. What happened here, there is a room for the hostel where people were congregated, drinking. There were approximately three individuals, those who approached the room. They started shooting randomly. Out of that, ten people succumbed to the shooting. So ten people died at the scene. One more, we know a three-year-old boy died in hospital. Fourteen others are in hospital. The other deceased include a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl as well. Forensics and ballistics officers are on scene. They are doing a search for evidence and they are still looking for those three suspects. There's no word on motive why this happened. National police told media on scene that these shebeens have been very challenging for police. There's been a lot of murders that have been reported on these types of locations. So they've been cracking down. They say they have shut down 12,000 of these since, well, between April and September of this year.
