Snow fell across Tasmania's central midlands on Christmas Day, creating a rare white Christmas during the Australian summer. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed this was the first time in twenty years that Australia experienced snowfall on Christmas Day.

Residents and visitors described the scene as a winter wonderland, with some traveling specifically to witness the event. Hobart's Mount Wellington saw temperatures as low as minus 1.4°C, with wind chills making it feel much colder, making this a memorable occasion for many.

If you were dreaming of a white Christmas, this year there was one a little closer to home. How good is this? It's actually decorating the tree and it's snowing outside. It was a winter wonderland in the heart of summer as snow fell in the central midlands of Tasmania. It is snowing where we are and we are so excited! It's Tasmania, it's summertime and it's absolutely belting down with snow. It was a scene from a Christmas movie and quite a different take on the typical Aussie celebration. The Bureau of Meteorology says the last time it snowed in Australia on Christmas Day was two decades ago. Having a white Christmas in Australia, well when you're an Aussie coming from Queensland, this is very unusual. The snow line dropped to around 700 metres this morning with gusty winds bringing rain to the west and south of Tasmania. We did drive here especially for the snow because we just love this sort of weather. Even Hobart saw white tops, Mount Wellington received a dusting of snow and the mercury on the mountain dipped to minus 1.4 degrees though the wind chill made it feel significantly colder at minus 13.9. Sitting, being cosy, having a nice warm meal, having a drink, my hot drink. Making the most of the winter magic, it'll be a Christmas many will remember for years to come. Sophie Jacobsen, 10 News.
