The plan follows the leak of a previous U.S. proposal that suggested ceding Ukrainian territory to Russia, a move opposed by Ukraine and its European allies due to concerns it could reward Russian aggression. While the Trump administration has ruled out NATO membership for Ukraine, the new plan's security guarantees are intended to function similarly. There is little public evidence that Russia is currently seeking to end the conflict.

Good morning, Vlad. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky briefed journalists on a new 20-point peace plan hammered out with U.S. negotiators in recent days. According to reports in the Ukrainian media, the draft proposes that parts of the current front line in eastern Ukraine would be frozen, with Russian and Ukrainian troops staying where they are. It also gives Ukraine assurances that if it comes under attack again, its allies would come to its defense. The Trump administration has ruled out allowing Ukraine into the NATO alliance, but the security guarantees in this plan would apparently work essentially just like NATO membership. This all follows the leak of President Trump's 28-point peace plan last month, which proposed handing over Ukrainian territory to Russia. Ukraine and its European allies fear that doing that would essentially reward Vladimir Putin for his invasion, and could even encourage him to do it again in the future, either in Ukraine or elsewhere in Europe. It's thought Russia's suffered around a million casualties in this war that Vladimir Putin started, but publicly at least, there's little evidence that he's serious about ending the conflict.
