A new Ipsos poll covering 30 countries, including 11 in Europe, indicates that a significant majority of Europeans are pessimistic about their countries' future. France stands out, with 92% of respondents believing their nation is on the wrong track, marking a record low in confidence.

The survey highlights that crime and safety are the dominant concerns across Europe, though issues vary by country. For example, health care is a major worry in Hungary, migration control in the United Kingdom, and the risk of military conflict in Poland. Climate change has dropped in priority, with no country naming it as the top issue.

What is the top concern across Europe? Crime, inflation and political instability have driven France's level of confidence to the bottom. A striking 92% of French people believe their country is heading off on the wrong track. A record for France, according to a periodical Ipsos poll on 30 countries, including 11 in Europe. The French are not alone. Widespread pessimism is also apparent in the Netherlands, Hungary, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Sweden, meaning the vast majority believe their country is on the wrong path. Globally, the most common source of anxiety is crime and violence. In Europe, safety is the dominant concern. In France, Germany, Belgium and especially Sweden, where the wider European picture is much more varied. For example, compared to the rest of the continent, Hungarians seem disproportionately concerned about the state of their health care, while migration control is the main issue for respondents in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the risk of military conflicts has been gaining urgency, becoming the most pressing issue in Poland, surpassing even Israel. Climate change is tied with conflicts in ninth place, a lost four points from last year, and no surveyed countries indicated it as the top issue to address.
