I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. We had a very good dialogue. I was able to get a sense of his soul. He's a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country. Bush later explained that what impressed him was a private moment when Putin showed him a cross his mother gave him. Later, Bush said he hadn't been wrong about Putin's character in that moment, but that Putin had changed, hardened by the poison of power. Bush learned his lesson. Whether Donald Trump has may be clear after Friday's meeting. For Ukraine's president who warned Trump that Putin was playing him, the answer could mean the difference between peace talks and more missiles.
