Tropical storm Erin is currently strengthening in the Atlantic, with meteorologists forecasting it will reach hurricane status soon. The storm, which currently has winds of 50 miles per hour, is expected to become a hurricane within the next day and could develop into a major hurricane shortly after.

Forecast models indicate Erin will pass just north of Puerto Rico, though some impacts on the island are anticipated. The National Hurricane Center notes that confidence in the storm's path decreases beyond several days, and meteorologists are closely monitoring its progress. In addition to Erin, severe flooding and high heat are affecting parts of the southeastern United States.

When could Tropical Storm Erin become a hurricane?

CBS News Meteorologist Rob Marciano is tracking today's storms. That includes tropical storm Aaron that is now getting stronger in the Atlantic. Rob, good morning. Hey, good morning, Nate. We'll start with tropical storm Aaron. You can see this wide shot. It doesn't look to be that big right now, but we do expect it to grow and become very strong. Our major hurricane before this is all said and done right now. It's got 50 mile per hour winds. We expect it to get to hurricane strength by late tomorrow and then major hurricane by early Sunday or late in the day on Sunday. And the track takes it just north of Puerto Rico. But I do think that Puerto Rico will see some impact with this and our extended range computer models here. This represents some of the American model solutions. You can see some of the solutions bring it a little closer to home and the National Hurricane Center has admitted that the confidence beyond days three and four is a little bit on the low side. So we're gonna be watching this very carefully, obviously also watching the threat for seeing severe flooding across the southeast again today, although it should be shifting more towards the Carolinas, Charleston, Wilmington, K. Patterson up through Norfolk Hampton Roads. These storms will bubble up in the afternoon and some of these could have the heavy downpours that we've seen for the past couple of days. So 234 inches of rainfall in one spot will bring that flash flooding where it's not flooding. We're gonna see some heat and humidity across the southeast. That will be at the very least uncomfortable temperatures feeling like up and over 100 in Houston and Dallas in Jackson, Mississippi and in Charleston, South Carolina.
