What does it feel like to battle like a knight for a day?

So, my name is Wyatt Campbell and I do HEMA. Hey everybody, my name is Jay Mays. I'm a historical fencing master from Wolsten Historical Fencing. So, HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts. But what we focus on here at the club is the fencing aspect of it, so sometimes a more appropriate word would be historical fencing for what we do specifically. It's all under the umbrella of HEMA. What drew me into HEMA was, I think from the time I was a kid, movies. I grew up basically swinging sticks around, wanting to win at a sword fight. I really love the elements of competition. I really love the element of historical research, that's really fun for me. So connecting to historical masters through reading their books, you get to know these people that died hundreds of years ago. And we know that we're bringing back to life an ancient martial art that's hundreds of years old. When I'm fighting, what I really really love about it is I feel really present in the moment. There's a bit of stress involved as well, so you have to make sure you're breathing right. A lot of adrenaline and excitement, for sure. The hardest thing about learning to fight in HEMA is just how actually complex it is. The HEMA community in Winnipeg is a very good group of people. We all have this common interest, we're all a bunch of nerds and geeks who love swords. What I want the world to know about HEMA is just that it exists. I like the diversity of it. Nerdy people like me get to get together and play with swords. Oh shoot, I think I'm up. I wish I'd started this 30 years ago when I was the same age as these guys. So kind of what we're seeing is more and more interactions between the clubs. I think it's just become a part of who I am. I don't even know that I can separate myself from HEMA anymore. Ever since I discovered it, I knew that that was my passion and that was going to be one of the things that I followed. So I just kept on pursuing it. So I think I do it because I meant to.
