West Bank museum showcases Gazan artists

This is not an exhibition. Those are the words marked on the entrance of the Palestinian museum in the occupied West Bank. Here, alongside traditional and contemporary pieces, are odes to Palestinian culture amidst war in the besieged Gaza Strip. For example, this pile of rubble represents the widespread destruction in the enclave, not just the loss of life, but also of culture. Most of the artists' studios in Gaza were bombed and destroyed. This is an expression and demonstration of the situation we're going through as Palestinians in these unusual circumstances. It's also a message to the world regarding this crazy situation and to show as much support as possible for the people and artists in Gaza. According to the exhibition organisers, the display is a journey through Gazan art, particularly poignant following the deaths of artists, poets and writers. Names of 115 artists are on show, with those killed in the war marked in black. There are artworks by artists who were martyred during this aggression. There are four artists who we lost. There are also many artists whose works were completely lost in Gaza. And what remains from their artistic experience and artistic career are only artworks that were acquired by individuals, institutions and universities in the West Bank. The Palestinian Culture Ministry last month said 24 cultural centres in Gaza had been entirely or partially destroyed since the start of the war.
