A knife-wielding teenage boy has been shot dead by police in Bunnings carpark in Willetton, Perth. The 16-year-old boy had phoned Triple Zero saying he planned ‘acts of violence’ and stabbed a male member of the public. The WA Police Commissioner says the teenager had ‘mental health and radicalisation issues’.

In a recent incident in a Perth suburb, a teenage boy armed with a 30 centimetre kitchen knife attacked a stranger in a car park. The confrontation escalated when the teenager chased a police car, making stabbing motions in the air with the knife. Police arrived promptly at the scene and attempted to subdue the 16-year-old with tasers, which proved ineffective.

As the situation intensified, the teenager continued to advance on the officers, prompting one of them to discharge a firearm. The shot fatally wounded the teenager, who was subsequently provided with CPR at the scene by authorities. Despite their efforts, the teenager was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Investigations revealed that the Caucasian teenager was a practising Muslim and believed to have been radicalised by online groups. Prior to the attack, he had sent out messages on social media that raised alarms, leading to swift action by the police. The police thanked members of the Muslim community for their assistance in identifying the individual quickly, highlighting the crucial role this partnership played in responding to the incident.

Western Australia's top police official, Cole Blanch, assured the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community, attributing the attack to a combination of mental health issues and online radicalisation. Despite the teenager being known to police and believed to have acted alone, the area's residents were advised to stay indoors as a precautionary measure. Although the investigation continues and the incident has characteristics of a terror attack, it has not been officially categorized as such.

In response to the event, the Prime Minister expressed condolences and gratitude via social media, thanking the WA police for their swift and professional response that ensured the safety of the community. The Prime Minister also acknowledged the efforts of WA Premier Roger Cook in managing the situation.

Police say their investigation is still continuing and while it has the hallmarks of a terror attack, they have not officially declared it as one.
