Traditionally known for winter sports, especially after hosting the Winter Olympics, the country is now promoting summer tourism, capitalizing on its cooler mountain climate and scenic views.

Officials are optimistic about increased investment in rural and outdoor tourism, following the example of neighboring Croatia, whose Adriatic coast has seen a tourism boom. While Bosnia's mountain tourism remains smaller in scale, the country aims to attract more visitors in the summer and potentially develop year-round tourism opportunities.

Warming climate forces Bosnia to rethink tourism

This is a rare sight in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Just a short drive from the Mediterranean coast, the mid-altitude mountain resorts near Sarajevo, the country's capital, usually attract visitors only when these peaks are snow-capped. But climate change is pushing them towards summer tourism. The climate here is fantastic. It is not hot at all. It is truly a good choice for a humane summertime vacation. Sarajevo once hosted the Winter Olympics, but rising temperatures mean snowfall is now scarce and erratic, making this shift unavoidable. The ski season was bleak because of the shortage of snow, but so far we are having a fabulous summer. Bosnia, one of Europe's weaker economies, is betting on summer tourism, following the lead of Balkan neighbours like Croatia. We have reason for optimism. We expect increased investment in rural tourism, mountain, outdoor tourism, which is the real prospect for the Sarajevo region. With Mediterranean views and bargain prices, Bosnia could become the next Balkan summer hotspot — if it can handle the crowds. For now, Sarajevo's mountain tourism remains far smaller than Croatia's booming Adriatic coast. Just five hours away, Croatian cities like Dubrovnik, a historic city, want to make the best of the rising temperatures. The long-term goal of Dubrovnik and its tourism board, one of our strategic goals, is to extend the season and to become a year-round tourist destination. Dubrovnik saw nearly two million overnight stays in the first half of 2025. Bosnia is ready to follow suit, turning warmer days into a year-round welcome.
