Zwirner survived the incident after undergoing six surgeries and still has a bullet lodged near her heart. The trial included emotional testimony from Zwirner, and the outcome is seen as a message to school systems to improve safety policies. Parker still faces a separate criminal case for child neglect.

Thursday, nearly three years later, she won in court. This could have been prevented. The former first grade teacher and her attorneys convinced the jury her former assistant principal, Ebony Parker, seen here in police body camera video, was negligent and didn't prevent a six-year-old student from opening fire in the classroom. Children's safety is the most important thing. This verdict reminds people that you will be held accountable if you don't make that your first concern. In an often emotional trial, jurors heard powerful testimony from Zwirner herself about the moments after the boy pulled the trigger. I thought I was dying. I thought I had died on my way to heaven or in heaven, but then it all got black. John Doherty is a school safety consultant and former school administrator. You think this may send a message to other school systems around the country? I think it would send a message to school systems that they need to be better prepared with the overall policies, procedures, and training of their staff and making sure that they are proactive as possible.
