A study of over 13,000 women in Victoria, Australia, has revealed that 71% of those reporting pain felt dismissed by healthcare professionals, with 90% experiencing pain for more than a year and 89% noting an impact on their mental health. The most common conditions associated with pain were menstrual and hormonal issues, endometriosis, musculoskeletal problems, and migraines.

In response, the Victorian Government plans to implement 27 recommendations from an inquiry, including an action plan for cultural and systemic change. Initiatives include introducing the Green Whistle pain relief for IUD insertions in 20 clinics and establishing a new specialist clinic at the Royal Children's Hospital to support young women and children suffering from pain.

A study conducted of more than 13,000 women aged between 12 and 79 found those who expressed feelings of pain, 71% of them felt they were being dismissed by healthcare professionals even though 90% said they experienced that pain for more than a year and 89% said it affected their mental health. The top conditions associated with pain were menstrual and hormonal conditions, endometriosis, musculoskeletal problems and migraines. For too many women and girls they're not being listened to which means in turn they're not getting the treatment and the care they need and deserve. The Victorian Government intends to implement 27 recommendations as a result of the inquiry. The first step is to work now on the action plan for the implementation of those recommendations recognising of course that this is about big cultural and system change. And roll out the use of the Green Whistle for IUD insertion across 20 sexual reproductive health clinics in Victoria. What the Green Whistle does, it gives women control over managing their pain but also over their body and their reproductive choices. As part of the health rollout, Government announced a new specialist clinic at the Royal Children's Hospital to support young women and children suffering from pain. Some of them reach us at the Children's Hospital but there hasn't been a clear pathway for them to reach us and to access care, well that changes today. Jack Perry, 10 News.
