Satellite imagery is showing details of the humanitarian crisis in Sudan amid the country's ongoing civil war. People in al-Fashir were shot in the streets, targeted in drone strikes, crushed by trucks and abducted, witnesses have said after the RSF, violently seized the Sudanese city.

Satellite imagery is being used to document the ongoing humanitarian crisis in al-Fashir, Sudan, as unsafe conditions prevent journalists from reporting on the ground. Researchers have identified numerous objects consistent with human bodies and visible signs of violence, including large bloodstains, following the RSF paramilitary group's seizure of the city.

Eyewitness accounts and aid organizations report widespread atrocities, including beatings and killings, with hundreds confirmed dead and thousands unaccounted for. Displacement camps run by Doctors Without Borders note a significant absence of women and children among those fleeing the violence.

Satellite imagery shows horrors in Sudan

The U.N. has called it the world's biggest humanitarian crisis, and this week the U.S. was also involved in intense negotiations to broker an end to the war in Sudan. As conditions there make it impossible for journalists to operate safely, researchers are using satellite imagery to document what is happening. Haley Ott has more now from London. Inside a city under siege, Sudan's al-Fashr, occupied by the RSF paramilitary group, where civilians are trapped in a nightmare. Analyzing satellite images of the city is Yale researcher Natty Raymond. There are simply too many objects on the ground now that weren't there before, that are consistent with the dimensions of human bodies, that we simply can't count them all. Even from space, these photos are the closest we can get to witnessing what's happening in al-Fashr. And even from high above, they show the horrors unfolding, like these large red stains on the ground. And the only explanation we can get is that red color around an object that is between 1.3 to 2 meters, which is the average proportion of a human being, that that is blood. Horror has raged in Sudan between the country's military and the powerful RSF paramilitary force for over two years. On October 26, the RSF seized al-Fashr, reportedly rampaging through the city. Radha Mohammed walked for days to get to this displacement camp. In the street, we saw beating, raping, whipping. They were whipping people with whips and other things, anything, even running people over with their cars. And while hundreds in al-Fashr have reportedly been killed, the fate of thousands more is unknown. Doctors Without Borders helps run camps for people who make it out.
