South Florida is home to the largest group of Venezuelans in the United States. Many left their country after Nicolas Maduro took power and say they'd support the U.S. using military force to oust him. But some are also worried they'll be deported as the Trump administration cancels their protected status.

Venezuelan immigrants in the United States are facing increased uncertainty following the cancellation of their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) by former President Donald Trump. Over half a million Venezuelans are affected by this decision, which Trump described as removing a remnant of previous open border policies. 

In Doral, Florida, a city with a significant Venezuelan population, some residents have already left for Europe to avoid deportation. Local business owners and officials, many of whom supported Trump, now express disappointment and concern for the future of their community members as TPS expires.

Venezuelans in U.S. face uncertainty as Trump cancels protected status

It's no wonder Durao, Florida is nicknamed Durao Suela. Two in five people living here are from Venezuela. Like Jose Mendez, who was a city auditor in Marasaibo until, he says, the Maduro government forced him into exile in 2022. He hopes the U.S. removes Nicolas Maduro from power. I truly want him to be overthrown. I'll say it even if it hurts me later, if I'm sent back. Mendez fears he'll be deported back to Venezuela because his temporary protected status in the U.S. expires in November. More than half a million Venezuelans are losing their TPS status after Trump deemed it an unwanted remnant of what he calls Biden's open border policies. Mendez says he's now worried he'll be arrested by American immigration officials in scenes of government violence that remind him of the Venezuela he fled. I'm seeing the same thing happen here. I thought U.S. officials would be more professional and less violent. To avoid deportation, some Venezuelans have already left the U.S. for places like Spain and Italy. Vacancy rates in Durao have gone up this year, but this is also the place where more than 60 percent of voters supported Donald Trump. Restaurant owner Wilmer Escaray voted for Trump last November. Would you still vote for Trump today? No, I don't think so, because he's not keeping the word he says he will do it. He never says he will take the TPS down. 20 percent of Escaray's workers at his multiple businesses are Venezuelans with TPS. He'll lose them when their status expires, and he says Venezuela has only grown more dangerous. They're playing with us. Trump has ramped up U.S. military might in the Caribbean, ordered strikes on suspected Venezuelan drug boats, and authorized covert action to potentially topple Maduro. Yes, we're trying to remove Maduro from power, which is great. Durao City Councilman Rafael Pinero is Venezuelan and a Republican. He says his only disagreement with Trump is the decision to end TPS. It's hard to see good people now having to leave the country. Many exiled Venezuelans wish their protected status in the U.S. could be extended until after Maduro is gone.
