Known in Venezuela as the first combatant, Celia Flores de Maduro is a central figure of the country's politics and has been at Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's side for over 30 years. Trained as a lawyer, Flores was part of Hugo Chavez's defense team in 1992, after the former president's failed attempt to overthrow the conservative government. She became a fervent activist for Chavez following the trial and still regularly pays homage to the former leader on her social media. Under Chavez, Flores became a member of parliament and eventually succeeded Nicolas Maduro as president of the Venezuelan National Assembly. She was the first woman to hold the title. She then served as Venezuela's attorney general from 2012 until Maduro's election in 2013, when she became the country's first lady. Flores returned to politics in 2016, but the 69-year-old's decades-long career has been marked by controversy. During her term as president of the National Assembly, she banned journalists from entering the country's parliament. She was also criticized for employing dozens of her family members. Then in 2016, two of her nephews were arrested in Haiti for drug trafficking and tried in the United States. Ten years later, it's Flores' turn to stand trial in the US. Still a member of Venezuelan parliament, she has been indicted by a New York federal court alongside her husband, Nicolas Maduro. The couple has arrived on US soil after being captured in Caracas by US special forces. They face charges of narco-terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States.
