Investigators have recovered the UPS plane's cockpit voice recorder and flight data from the site of Tuesday's deadly crash. CBS News' Nicole Valdes has the latest.

Authorities in Louisville, Kentucky, have recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from a UPS cargo plane that crashed during takeoff, resulting in at least 12 confirmed fatalities and nine people still missing. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports that the plane's left engine detached from the wing during takeoff, which may have contributed to the crash.

Search teams are conducting a de-layering operation at the crash site to locate additional victims beneath extensive debris. The NTSB is analyzing the recovered black boxes, which were damaged by fire, in hopes of determining the cause of the accident. A vigil is planned in Louisville to honor the victims, and the NTSB will provide further updates in a scheduled press briefing.

We are learning more about that fiery cargo plane crash in Louisville, Kentucky. The National Transportation Safety Board says it believes the plane's left engine fell from the wing during takeoff. At least 12 people are now confirmed dead and nine are still missing. The mayor of Louisville is briefing reporters right now. Let's play a little bit of that. We now in what's called a de-layering search in coordination with the NTSB and their investigation about the crash. There will also be individuals that will be looking underneath. There's so much debris there. There's so much charred, mangled metal that not all the bodies may have been located until you look underneath certain things. And so that is going through the various layers of debris on the field. That will begin now. Everything to date has been just looking at what can be seen without moving. CBS News correspondent Nicole Valdez is standing by in Louisville with the very latest. So Nicole, what else have we heard about this investigation thus far? Hi Vladimir. Mayor Greenberg now telling reporters that the number of people missing has dropped from initially 15 down to nine. They have located at least six people at this point. That is likely very good news in the wake of this tragedy for so many families who are waiting for any update on those loved ones after, again, a horrifying and of course deadly crash. The number of dead still 12 people. And later today, today we will see this community, the city of Louisville honor those victims at a vigil later this afternoon. But the NTSB and their investigation is still, of course, very much top of mind as they work to determine really the root of the problem that caused this plane to crash shortly after takeoff. They confirmed they were able to locate the two black boxes on board that plane. And the image that you're actually looking at here is a piece of the plane that they have actually been finding pieces of across the crash site. This is the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder recovered from the wreckage. You could see it looks like they are damaged by the heat, which is no shocker when you look at, again, reminder of the image of that long burning fire shortly after that plane came crashing down here. The NTSB has confirmed that they left engine actually detached from the wing during takeoff. And you actually can see a bit of an image of that. And several of the social media videos that we've been showing you when that plane tried to start taking off, you could see there was already a portion of the left side of the plane that looked to be on fire maybe minutes before the crash. So at this point, the NTSB is hopeful they'll be able to extract critical data from those black boxes, Vlad, that will hopefully give them a real answer as to what went wrong here. Yeah. All right.
