More details are emerging about the massive explosion near the Louisville, Kentucky, airport after a UPS plane crashed and erupted in flames. CBS News' Tom Hanson reports.

A UPS cargo plane crashed in Louisville, Kentucky, resulting in at least 12 confirmed fatalities and leaving several others critically injured with severe burns. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that the plane's left engine detached during takeoff, causing a fire that engulfed the aircraft and impacted nearby businesses.

Investigators have recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, commonly known as black boxes, and are confident they will be able to extract relevant data despite the intense heat. Witnesses described multiple explosions, chaos, and extreme heat so severe it melted people's clothing. The engine involved was manufactured by General Electric, which, along with UPS, expressed condolences and support for those affected.

Good morning. What more can you tell us? Hey there, good morning to you. Well NTSB is on the ground They are going to be conducting their investigation throughout the day They were able to retrieve those two black boxes something They thought might not even be possible because of the sustained heat from those flames Those black boxes are going to be headed to DC for further investigation We have identified the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder This is what is commonly referred to as a black box The NTSB says the black boxes are built to withstand extreme heat and expressed confidence They'll be able to extract the relevant data stored inside According to preliminary information released by the NTSB the area around the left wing of the 34 year old aircraft was Enveloped by fire during its takeoff roll Tuesday The agency says CCTV footage from the airport then shows the left engine Detaching from the wing the engine that's been seen in some photographs We do believe that that is the engine from the left side of the plane It is actually on the airfield Grade A recycling was one of several local businesses in the aircraft's impact zone Owner Sean Garber was away on business when he got a FaceTime from employee Georgie Dow who was distraught She said no a plane crashed. I said you mean a plane crashed away from us And then she know the plane crashed on us. It wasn't just a couple minutes It wasn't just the plane crashed and that was it. It was an explosion after explosion after explosion I heard you know people yelling Where are these people? One of our truck drivers had that our vendors his jacket was melted He said he thought he broke his leg. So it was so hot that people's clothing There was melting was melted and The engine that fell off that plane during takeoff was manufactured by General Electric I want to read you a couple of statements here. Let's start with GE's They say they are deeply saddened by the accident and supporting the NTSB investigation Meantime the CEO of UPS also sending a message to employees They're reading in part our hearts continue to be with all who have been impacted Errol So alarming to hear those first-hand accounts Tom What else did witnesses tell you about what they saw what they heard and what they're living through right now in the aftermath? I I Mean the stories are harrowing and deeply disturbing Errol. We spoke with that woman who was on the ground She describes a chaotic scene where people were running around you heard how hot the flames were the clothing melting off of people some people In critical condition at the hospital with severe burns to their skin She also talks about a wall of smoke But one of the things that she's also grappling with is survivors guilt here She says it could have been her take a listen trying to comfort them and you try to comfort each other Right when you're in a situation where you know could have been any of us, right? I could have easily but I was in that building earlier in the day taking talking to what two of our employees and Like I could have if it would have happened earlier like I could have been there right and My heart goes out to the people that we don't know where they are But yeah, you just it's chaos right you don't know It's like what's gonna happen next? So, you know people here just going to work just doing their jobs expecting a normal day that ended in catastrophe You know, I should also note that they were wrapping up their day when this disaster struck And so a lot of people were looking to get home to their families Some people never did it was heartbreaking Tell me appreciate your reporting on this and bringing those bringing us those those harrowing experiences.
