At least 12 people have died after a UPS cargo plane crashed during takeoff in Louisville, Kentucky. The incident occurred as the plane, carrying thousands of gallons of fuel and bound for Honolulu, exploded into flames shortly after leaving the runway and crashed into several local businesses, including an auto parts facility and a petroleum recycling plant.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have recovered both black boxes from the wreckage and are focusing on a possible engine failure as the cause. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has declared an emergency, dedicating state resources and establishing a relief fund to assist the families of the victims.

Now, meanwhile, investigators from the NTSB are on scene trying to figure out how this all happened. CBS News correspondent Nicole Valdez is live for us in Louisville, Kentucky. Nicole, what is the NTSB saying about the crash today? Well, Liz, the good news is they say they found both black boxes aboard that UPS plane. And while they were damaged in the heat, the NTSB says it's still confident it can pull that critical data that could answer the big question, what went wrong? And Nicole, what do we know about the victims? Well, unfortunately, the governor of Kentucky just confirmed now 12 people were killed in this crash. There, of course, are still so many questions here. And the investigation is really hoping to get those critical pieces, right, to better understand what that engine failure may have been that led to the crash again shortly after takeoff there. The video of that fiery explosion moments later, it wasn't just the thousands of gallons of fuel on board that plane that was set for a nine hour journey from Louisville to Honolulu. But where it crashed down, hitting an auto parts facility, petroleum recycling plant, among other businesses, in part sort of led to the massive smoke, the shelter in place and now the emergency declaration that Governor Andy Beshear has put in place, hoping to dedicate state resources and as well a state relief fund that he hopes will help in part pay for the funerals of those now 12 victims.
