A new photo exhibit at the Gagosian Gallery in London shows the Beatles on the brink of superstardom, thanks to Paul McCartney looking through his attic.

The images document the two months leading up to the band's first trip to the United States, capturing the group in relaxed, personal moments away from the public eye.

Unlike the staged images often taken by professional photographers, McCartney's photos show the band members at ease, including candid shots of John Lennon and a self-portrait of McCartney in the apartment where he wrote 'Yesterday.' These photographs highlight the uncertainty and anticipation the Beatles felt before their U.S. debut, providing insight into their journey from hopeful musicians to global icons.

Generally, when they were photographed by other photographers, they really kind of acted up for the camera. I mean, they were... They're performers. They were performers. But if one of their own, they're totally at ease. There's a few pictures of John Lennon wearing his heavy-framed Buddy Holly glasses, which he hated to be seen in public wearing. These sort of mundane moments right before the big moments. Mundane moments like this self-portrait Paul McCartney took in the apartment where he wrote the song, Yesterday. And even see Paul kind of in this ethereal way, in which I think he's also just literally he's forming his self-image, figuring out who he was going to be, who he was at that time. Coming into focus in more ways than one. Exactly. The Beatles came into focus and were one of the most famous bands in the world.
