Cocoa is native to the tropics, but the island's economic model is new, thanks to Dona Nena, who, unlike outsiders, pays fair prices to local producers. She began by grinding the cocoa beans by hand in her tiny kitchen. After taking an advanced course in chocolate making, today she employs 20 people, selling to tourists and five-star restaurants. Quality, not quantity, she says. We respect the forest's natural cycle. That's why we have the off-season, a period without cacao, to let the trees recover and produce again at the right time. The Amazon is considered essential to our planet's climate balance. As the world's foremost climate summit is being held here for the first time, the island's chocolate factory underscores the benefits of one of Brazil's main COP30 initiatives. It's called Tropical Forests Forever. Rather than donations, it would be a multi-billion dollar investment fund administered by the World Bank to finance sustainable development projects like these. But as world leaders prepare to gather here in the Amazon to discuss ways to reduce or revert global warming, this kind of project is just the tip of an increasingly melting iceberg. Carbon CO2 emissions are increasing, not falling. Oceans are warming and sea levels are rising. The goal of keeping global temperatures below two degrees to pre-industrial levels is looking increasingly out of reach. The UN Secretary-General calls it a climate meltdown. Emissions, temperatures and disasters keep rising. And those least responsible suffer the most. But commitments to quadruple clean energy sources to replace fossil fuels face mounting resistance, especially from the leader of one of the world's main polluters. The carbon footprint is a hoax made up by people with evil intentions. Brazil's president, who is hosting the leaders' summit ahead of COP30, will present a three-point plan described as strategic for addressing the climate crisis.
