The Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where Pope Francis is receiving treatment for pneumonia, has a notable history of treating popes. Located in the city of Rome, this hospital has often been a place of care for pontiffs, starting with Pope John Paul II. He first visited Gemelli Hospital in 1981 after an assassination attempt in St Peter's Square. Due to his frequent visits, a special suite was created for the popes, which includes meeting spaces for medical teams and a chapel. 

Pope Francis is currently being treated on the 10th floor of the hospital in this designated suite. The Gemelli Hospital is held in high regard within Italy, honoring its namesake Agostino Gemelli, a Franciscan friar and psychologist. The hospital's connection with the Vatican is evident as people have gathered at the on-site statue of John Paul II to pray for Pope Francis’s recovery. Candles bearing Pope Francis's image have been seen, and people are hopeful that he will soon be able to lead the Angelus prayer from the hospital’s balcony, a tradition continued by previous popes during their recovery.

I'm here at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome where Pope Francis has been treated for pneumonia. Now this hospital has a strong connection with the popes and on my left here is a statue of John Paul II who visited this hospital a number of times. He came here first after he was shot in St Peter's Square in 1981 and due to his frequent visits a special suite of rooms was created for the popes and that is where Pope Francis is receiving his treatment on the 10th floor of the hospital and there there's a place for the medical teams to meet and a chapel. Now we've seen people come to the statue in recent days to pray for Francis. There's candles with his face on them and people on Sunday were gathering hoping to see the pope for the Angelus prayer that he has in the past led from the balcony. They'll still be hoping to see him in the coming days as he tries to make a recovery from the pneumonia. Now the Gemelli is a very respected hospital in Italy and was named after Agostino Gemelli, a Franciscan friar and psychologist.
