Members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are reacting to the Trump administration's comments on a potential Greenland takeover from Denmark.

European leaders and Greenland’s government have strongly opposed U.S. President Trump’s consideration of a military takeover of Greenland. Several European countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Spain, joined Denmark in a statement asserting that decisions about Greenland rest solely with Denmark and Greenland.

Greenland’s Prime Minister rejected any basis for a U.S. takeover, and Denmark’s Prime Minister warned that such actions could threaten the future of NATO. The situation has raised concerns among European governments about the stability of the alliance, with some viewing U.S. statements as existential threats to NATO.

For more on the options the White House is considering to take over Greenland, CBS News Foreign Correspondent Ramey Innocencio joins us from our London newsroom. Errol, yes, good morning. And the fact that President Trump has not ruled out military force to take Greenland is edging NATO towards the previously unthinkable in its nearly eight-decade history. This is the possibility that one NATO member here, the United States, could start a conflict with another NATO member here, Denmark. And remember, Article 5 is part of the NATO military alliance agreement. This is the often talked about mutual defense clause that basically says an attack on one of us is an attack against all of us. And several European governments are now pushing back against President Trump and his advisor Stephen Miller. The leaders of the United Kingdom, of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain have now joined Danish Prime Minister Mette Friedriksen and issued a joint statement of solidarity, a warning to the Trump administration that Greenland belongs to its people, it's for Denmark and Greenland and them only to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland. Now, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Friedrich Nielsen says there is no basis for a takeover and there is no world in which the U.S. can simply conquer Greenland. Greta's Prime Minister Mark Carney is also joining in and he is dispatching his governor-general, who is of Inuk descent and shared Arctic Inuit heritage with Greenland, along with his foreign minister early next month. But again, this is devolving into an existential crisis for NATO. With these statements, these threats, as many European governments are seeing them, from the Trump White House, and Denmark's Prime Minister says that it would signal the end of the NATO military alliance, which frankly, adversaries around the world, Russia and China, would probably be very happy to see.
