Nineteen-year-old Ana Sofía represents many whose families face an uncertain future. Having been born a U.S. citizen shortly after her mother Beatriz entered the country without authorization, Ana Sofía has grappled with the fear of separation all her life. While they continue their livelihood selling vegetables near the border, the concern of deportation remains, despite Beatriz having no criminal history.

Economic experts warn that the deportation of approximately 11 million undocumented residents could severely impact the U.S. economy. Local leaders, like the mayor of McAllen, Texas, acknowledge the contributions of undocumented individuals to their communities. Yet, challenges such as funding constraints pose significant barriers to the implementation of mass deportation plans, leaving hope for many that such measures may not fully materialize.

Beatriz and Ana Sofía exemplify resilience despite uncertainties. With Ana Sofía pursuing journalism studies and Beatriz expressing pride in her daughter's ambitions, they strive to continue their lives in the United States, hoping to sustain what they view as their American dream.

Nineteen-year-old Ana Sofía has lived her whole life worrying that U.S. immigration officers will take away her mother. When I was a little girl, I would be scared to go to school sometimes because I would be scared, like, what if my mom doesn't come home? Her mother, Beatriz, left Mexico 20 years ago and settled in the U.S. without authorization. Ana Sofía was born shortly after as a U.S. citizen, and the two have been inseparable. They cleaned houses to survive. Now they sell vegetables at a market near the border. I was scared when she was little. Now she's old enough to get by on her own, but I would do anything to stay if they try and deport me. Beatriz says she has no criminal record, but if immigration officers arrest her, mother and daughter have a plan. I think they'll let me make one phone call. I'll call my daughter and tell her how to close the business, pay off the house. I don't know. There would be so much to do. The Alamo flea market has been here for 40 years, but never has been the target of an immigration raid. Now with Trump's promise that he will find undocumented immigrants wherever they are, underneath the market's buzz, there is a current of fear. I really don't know. Like, I think it will just, like, close down for a bit, or maybe it will still open up, but the places will be closed down. There will be nowhere to shop. About 11 million undocumented immigrants live and work in the U.S. Economists say deporting all of them would devastate the economy. And the mayor of McAllen, Texas, a Republican, agrees. Because a lot of times you have people that have come illegally, but they are now very good productive residents of the United States. Are you advocating that someone like that stays? Definitely. Trump's mass deportations also face major funding hurdles, leaving Ana Sofía hopeful they won't happen. It's just a very, very big fear battle. I hope he's so incompetent where he can't go through with whatever he says. A lot of people say he's like a chihuahua. He just barks, but doesn't bite. For now, mother and daughter say they'll carry on as normal. Ana Sofía is studying journalism in college, and Beatriz says she's proud of her daughter.
