Rescuers searching for a tourist submersible missing near the Titanic wreck have heard "banging noises" in the area near where the vessel lost contact. According to the U.S Coast Guard, a Canadian P-3 aircraft heard the sounds, which naval experts are analysing.

In the depths of the Atlantic, it's pitch black. The weather out there freezing cold. Crews searching for that missing sub face an almost unthinkable challenge. So that's a big area to search when you're looking for something as small as this David Russell would know. He led the British Navy's failed efforts in 2000 to rescue survivors aboard the sunken Russian submarine, the Kursk. We have the equipment to bring those men to the surface and was even put on the ship. It was even portrayed by actor Colin Firth in a movie about the mission. Mother of God. We've lost the submarine. Sometimes you just have to attach a big cable and winch the darn thing up, but it's a really difficult task. Whatever they do. Crews face long odds even with the military aircraft flying over the ocean surface and the sonar buoys they're deploying to monitor underwater. These ones were used in the search for Malaysian Airlines flight 370 still missing here. We're trying to bring it putting together in hours with typically takes days and weeks to get to the location. Consider the size of the area searched so far about 20,000 square kilometers. That's bigger than Lake Ontario. Crews are focusing on the surface, but also the depths of the Atlantic. The Titan submersible is designed to dive 4000 meters or more than seven times the height of the CN Tower. I think it was going to be almost impossible to affect a sub to sub rescue on that day. A Canadian Coast Guard ship. There's still some hope. 50 years ago, the Canadian Coast Guard ship John Cabot helped to rescue the Pisces 3 submersible. The crew was saved with only 12 minutes of oxygen to spare. We know more about the moon surface than the bottom of the ocean. Because we just don't have a survey there, so that's that's a big issue.
