Somaliland, a territory of more than 3 million people in the Horn of Africa, seceded from Somalia more than three decades ago, but it hadn't internationally been recognized as an independent state by any country.

Israel has formally recognized Somaliland as an independent state, becoming the first nation to do so since the region declared independence from Somalia over 30 years ago. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the recognition by signing an official document and speaking with Somaliland's president by phone.

Netanyahu described the recognition as an opportunity to expand cooperation in economic, agricultural, and social development sectors. He also invited the Somaliland president for an official visit to Israel and mentioned Somaliland's interest in joining the Abraham Accords. Earlier reports indicated Israel had discussed with Somaliland the possibility of accepting Palestinians from Gaza.

Earlier this year, reports emerged that Israel had approached Somaliland about taking in Palestinians from Gaza. Somaliland seceded from Somalia more than 30 years ago.

Some of the stabbed victims remain in serious condition. A 38-year-old man was arrested for alleged attempted murder at the factory, authorities said.
