After sustaining a leg injury that left him unable to walk, Serovye used the terrain for cover and evaded multiple attacks by FPV (First Person View) drones, which have become a defining feature of the conflict.

The widespread use of drones by both Ukrainian and Russian forces has created a hazardous zone stretching several miles from the front lines, making the evacuation of wounded soldiers extremely difficult. Despite being surrounded and targeted by drones, Serovye and his partner managed to avoid further injury until they were eventually rescued by a medical evacuation team.

Ukrainian soldier crawled for days through drone kill-zone

A wounded Ukrainian soldier has told how he crawled for five days through a drone-infested kill zone on the front lines to reach medics. The 40-year-old goes by the call sign Serovye and said a battlefield injury left him without the use of his leg, but he knew he needed to escape. After a while I couldn't walk anymore, I crawled on all fours, I went up and down, all on my knees. I then found myself in a ditch, there were pine needles there. I dug the earth a bit and covered myself with soil so that I was less visible. I covered myself with pine needles as well, and then another FPV drone came, but it failed to hit us. FPV stands for First Person View, and describes the type of dystopian 21st century warfare dominating the battlefields of Europe's biggest military conflict. In Ukraine, the vast number of drones used by both sides have created a kill zone that stretches more than six miles from the contact line. It makes evacuation of the wounded almost impossible. We were literally surrounded by FPVs, bloody hell, and I got hit in the leg. Sorovye said he was deployed along the northern part of the front line in the Donetsk region, where Russian forces have rolled through Ukrainian lines in recent weeks. His injury left him and his partner with no choice. My leg went numb. I don't even know how to call this feeling, but I understand it was useless, and I said to my partner, let's get out of here or we'll get killed. Another Russian FPV drone tried to hit Sorovye and his fellow soldier, but it missed. Days later, he was picked up by a medical evacuation team. Sorovye said his son's birthday had just passed, but that it was he who got a little gift.

Videos circulating online reveal a luminous flying object hitting the vessel. No crew members were harmed. Activists part of the flotilla say they will not be deterred by the attack, and that their mission will continue as planned.
