Ukraine has been subjected to a series of Russian airstrikes, which officials suggest are in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. The latest strikes involved hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, hitting various locations across Ukraine, including key railway lines and residential areas in Zaporizhia. 

President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of using time meant for diplomatic efforts to launch new attacks, and he has called on Ukraine's allies to increase military aid and sanctions. While Ukrainian air defenses intercepted many of the attacks and the capital avoided major destruction, the ongoing threat and frequent air raid sirens continue to impact daily life.

For days, Ukraine has been striking Russian oil infrastructure to great effect. Ukrainian cities are paying the price for what seems like Russian retaliation. Overnight into the early hours of Saturday morning, a second wave of air raids in as many days. Hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles filling the skies, striking all over Ukraine, including critical railway lines in Kiev region. But residential areas of Zaporizhia have borne the brunt of these latest attacks. There was one explosion, then another one around 2 a.m. We were sheltering in the common space in the building. There were explosions one after another. My parrot is hiding under my arm. President Volodymyr Zelensky says Moscow is using preparation time meant to work on diplomacy and a possible meeting of the Russian and Ukrainian leaders to launch major new attacks. A day earlier, he told reporters only one thing stands in the way of a ceasefire. Russia is showing unwillingness toward diplomacy, first and foremost by striking civilian infrastructure, killing our civilians and our children. Allies need to step up the pace of military aid to guarantee security, he said. And sanctions and secondary sanctions are the only way to force Russia to negotiate. Air defenses repelled most of it, but even though this latest wave of Russian attacks was not as deadly and the capital was spared the kind of destruction we saw during Thursday's attacks, all-night air raid sirens, the threat from above, the fear that generates, is no less paralyzing for the capital and for the country.
