This development comes amid ongoing violence in Gaza, where the death toll has surpassed 65,000 according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

The recognition is intended to support prospects for peace and a two-state solution, though it marks a notable departure from U.S. policy, which has previously blocked Palestinian statehood at the United Nations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly opposed the move, stating that a Palestinian state will never exist and criticizing the decision as rewarding terrorism.

And on Sunday, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal all announced their formal recognition of a Palestinian state. Some hope the move will pressure Israel to end the war in Gaza, where the death toll is now more than 65,000, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. In the face of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace and a two-state solution. Palestinians have long dreamed of their own state in the war-torn Gaza Strip and the West Bank, which is occupied by Israel. Several other US allies, including France, also have plans to recognize Palestinian statehood. More than 140 other countries already do so. But yesterday, Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, vowed that a Palestinian state would never exist. And accused those countries recognizing it of giving a quote, huge prize to terrorism. This move is a significant break with US policy by several American allies. The US has previously used its veto power to stop a Palestinian state from gaining member status at the United Nations.
