Local villagers described losing everything, including homes and livelihoods, as they attempted to salvage what remained. While Vietnam avoided the higher death toll seen in the Philippines, where nearly 200 people have died, Cambodia and Laos remain on high alert as the typhoon continues its path northwest.

Surveying the carnage wreaked by Typhoon Kalmegi, some residents of this fishing village in Vietnam's south-central Dalai province have lost everything. The waves were too high. The house had to collapse. It had already been damaged once in a previous storm. Now it's fallen again. I have no idea where we'll live. Others tried to salvage whatever they could. Previous storms only took my roof, which I could fix. This one took the whole house and everything I own. Dozens of homes were destroyed in this and neighbouring provinces. The Environment Ministry says Kalmegi's fierce winds tore the roofs off a further 3,000 and left residents without water. As power companies work to restore electricity to the 1.6 million people in the country who were cut off when the typhoon hit, these villagers improvised to restore communications. Elsewhere in the province, this young shrimp farmer lost his home and his livelihood. At 9pm the storm hit. I went out and there was nothing left. My two shrimp ponds had become part of the ocean. I have nothing left except what I have on my body. I am new in this business so I had to invest a lot. Now I am empty-handed, with nothing to work with. In neighbouring Daklak province, evacuated residents returned to scenes like these. Our neighbour called to tell us the building had collapsed. When the typhoon was over, we came back and saw this terrible scene. The worst may be over now for Vietnam. It fared better than the Philippines, where the death toll from the damage caused by Typhoon Kalmegi is nearing 200 and could still climb. But neighbouring Cambodia and Laos are on high alert, as Kalmegi hurtles north-westwards towards them.
