Palms bent by the winds of up to 149 kilometres per hour as the storm dumped heavy rainfall on Vietnam's central provinces. More than half a million people evacuated from their homes and out of the typhoon's path. Those that remained struggling against the elements before seeking what shelter they could find. High winds battered this hotel on the coast, shattering glass across the lobby. Staff wearing motorcycle helmets for protection retreating further inside the building. This was the worst storm they'd seen for years. I feel so sorry for the hotel with all this broken glass. The wind is so, so strong, nothing can resist. We've never experienced such strong wind here. It's a natural disaster. What can we do? Further to the south, around the ancient capital of Hue, floods that killed scores of people last week are getting worse. Record levels of rain have fallen in the past seven days, more than one metre, as farmers struggle to adapt to a climate that's turned against them. I lost most of my belongings together with my livestock and poultry because they drowned. The water came too suddenly and I didn't have enough time to move them to higher ground. Back up the coast, the skies cleared on Friday morning, with residents returning to assess the destruction from the night before. 2,600 homes seriously damaged and the region on high alert for landslides and flash floods.
