Police are investigating the incident, focusing on potential mechanical failure or driver error, as the car briefly stopped before entering the train line and failed to exit before the collision. The train's crew were unharmed, and the freight route is expected to reopen soon, as the train was not derailed.

Ursula, police haven't ruled out any possibilities as to what's caused this crash, but they have told us their investigation is looking closely at the possibility it was caused by some sort of mechanical failure or driver error because of the behaviour of the car in the moments leading up to the crash. It happened around a quarter past ten this morning, a one and a half kilometre freight train was heading towards Melbourne. As it's gone through a rail crossing just outside the town of Cressy, it's collided with a car and the outcome of that has just been devastating. There were two men inside the vehicle, both of them have died. Local farmers and CFA members were the first people on the scene. There wasn't anything they could do to save the two men. There were only two people on board the train, a driver and an observer. They're both physically okay and are receiving support. Police officers have been able to interview them about what happened. The vehicle travelling south, it was hit by the train, come to a brief stop before entering the train line and for some unknown reason at this stage has failed to exit the train line. I expect to have it wrapped up in a few hours but that will also depend on rail safety regulator and other interested parties that need to come out and complete their investigations into what's happened. Once investigations are complete, there aren't expected to be too many complications reopening what is quite a significant freight route because this train wasn't derailed by this crash. Identifying the two men who have died has been quite a difficult task for Police Ursula in what's been incredibly tragic circumstances.
