The Syrian government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have signed a ceasefire agreement following intense fighting in northeast Syria. The agreement grants the Syrian government control over two of the three Kurdish-controlled provinces, including major dams and oil and gas fields.

The ceasefire follows a rapid government advance in the region, which prompted the withdrawal of Kurdish forces to the east of the Euphrates River. The development has brought relief to local residents, many of whom had fled the recent violence.

The Syrian president and the leader of the SDF have signed a ceasefire agreement, essentially handing the Syrian government control to two of the three Kurdish-controlled provinces in uncontested control of major dams and oil and gas fields. The ceasefire comes as a relief to residents, tens of thousands of whom fled the fighting in recent days.

After 25 years of talks, the EU signed the EU-Mercosur trade deal on Saturday, creating a 700 million-person free-trade area. Ratification is still pending, however, with the European Parliament set for a heated debate.
