He was known for his dress work and iconic use of his trademark Valentino red throughout his collections. And the CBC's Mark Harksell is on the story for us. So Mark, tell us about Valentino's life and legacy. A long life and a great legacy too, Andrew. He's essentially, he and his business partner, Gianni Gemetti, are essentially credited with bringing Italy to the forefront or to the seat, giving Italy a seat at the table when it comes to high fashion, paving the way for brands like Armani and Versace. Now, his death confirmed by the foundation in his and Giancarlo Gemetti's name earlier today in a social media post. They wrote, quote, our founder, Valentino Garavani, passed away today at his Roman residence surrounded by his loved ones. There's a funeral planned for him on Friday, but he will actually lie in state on Wednesday and Thursday in Rome. Now, Garavani had been retired since 2008, but he was still very much involved in fashion, still seen in the front row in fashion shows. Right to the very end, he was known, his brand, as one of the most fashionable, but also one of the most durable high fashion brands. He was seen as a visionary. He said in various interviews that his goal was, quote, to make women look beautiful, or he also said in 2007, I try to make my girls look sensational. Big stars who often wore his clothing, like Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, known as Val's gals. And he became known for his red dresses, which in the fashion industry became a thing. Valentino red, it was his own shade, his own Pantone color. Red dresses like these ones. Valentino, also the first designer brand to be quoted on the Milan Stock Exchange.
