In the municipal elections, the opposition CHP party's Ekrem İmamoğlu is up against the ruling AK Party's former Environment Minister Murat Kurum to extend his mandate for a second five-year term. The mayor's victory in 2019 propelled him to the forefront of national politics and dealt a blow to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his ruling AK Party. We love our mayor very much. He is fair and treats everyone equally. He prevented corruption. He spends Istanbul's money on Istanbul. It is more than a local election. Some predict that he will follow in Erdoğan's footsteps, rising from Istanbul mayor to Turkish president. Winning major cities is more of a deal for the opposition, that's one. And also it means access to foreign funds. It means having transnational links with both the economic actors and political actors. If you are governing a major global city, it means really you have visibility both in the international scene. İmamoğlu's rival Murat Kurum is a well-known technocrat. He argues that İmamoğlu has not met Istanbul's needs, particularly in preparing for natural disasters, a sensitive issue after the devastating earthquakes that affected 11 Turkish cities last year. I will vote for Murat. We waited for too long. He is not a liar. He is one of us and never abandoned us after the earthquake. Despite Ekrem İmamoğlu's popularity, he has a harder battle this time due to a fragmented opposition alliance compared to five years ago. The pro-Kurdish party's votes, recognized as the kingmaker for the opposition in previous local elections, are expected to flow to its own candidates, including in Istanbul. Whoever wins will have far-reaching implications for Turkish politics. İmamoğlu's victory might lend him opposition leadership and presidential nomination in 2028. But Kurum's victory might help President Erdoğan strengthen his power base and repair his legacy, particularly the troubled economy and foreign affairs.
