The announcement has prompted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to prepare a response during the Liberal cabinet meeting in Quebec. This is the first time President Trump has provided a specific timeline for enforcing tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Trump’s comments align with statements made during his inauguration, where he outlined an economic agenda focused on utilizing tariffs to encourage companies to relocate their production to the United States.

Trump also sounds to be returning to the rationale he gave when he first posted his tariff threat on social media, pointing to what he claims as illegal border crossing and drug smuggling. But Trump is also revealing more about how tariffs could fit into his economic agenda. We're gonna have a lot of companies coming in to avoid tariffs. You know, if you don't want tariffs, all you have to do is build your plant in the US. Trump's talk about using tariffs to push businesses to move their production from places like Canada to the US came just hours after his inauguration speech touched on his tariff agenda too. In that speech, Trump talks about using tariffs to bring money into the US treasury, saying that his administration would tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich Americans. But until his musing about a February 1st deadline for Canada last night, those lines in his speech amounted to the only talk about tariffs on inauguration day, leaving Canadian leaders on guard, but cautious about what could come.
