President Trump has authorized the deployment of the National Guard to Memphis, citing high rates of violent crime in the city. The decision has received support from some local leaders and residents, who believe the presence of the National Guard will help address ongoing safety concerns. However, Memphis Mayor Paul Young does not support the move, and some officials note that the National Guard is only a short-term solution. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee stated that the Guard will act as a force multiplier for local law enforcement, which is currently understaffed. The administration has not yet released detailed plans for the deployment, but discussions are ongoing about bringing additional federal resources to the city.

Memphis Mayor Paul Young, he is not supporting the President's decision here to bring in the National Guard but facts are facts, Memphis has 2,500 violent crimes per 100,000 people, that's according to the stats from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. You voiced your support here for President Trump's plan. Is this long overdue in this state? Well, good morning and thank you for having me on. Let me say at the onset, Memphis is a great city. I mean, it's a great place to live, it's the home of three Fortune 500 companies and six Fortune 1,000 companies, but there's no doubt that Memphis has been plagued for a long time with high crime and what's really concerning is violent crime. So we thank President Trump for his commitment to try to combat violent crime in Memphis. I'm a former United States Attorney. I recognize the importance of having good federal assets on the ground and frankly, we saw the way that the National Guard worked in Washington, D.C. to clean things up and if you talk to people who live in Washington, D.C., they will tell you that they feel safer now on the streets of Washington since the National Guard has come in and patrolled than they did before the National Guard came in. So on behalf of my constituents and both senators from Tennessee, Hagerty and Blackburn, we appreciate President Trump's commitment to making sure that we make Memphis a really safe city. Yeah, exactly right. I mean, some of the residents there, this is what they have to say about the National Guard coming in, watch. So you welcome the National Guard here? Yes, this is an opportunity for us and for our city. I hope we make the most of it. I have armed security seven days a week and it's unbelievable what happens every day in front of my restaurant. He believes the Guard will make a difference. Without a doubt. President Donald Trump, who is finally saying, yes, Memphis matters, we are going to make Memphis safe again because our local leaders have failed to do so. So clearly people want a change here. Can you give us any indication as to what this plan will look like? Will it mirror what we are seeing in D.C.? Have you been given any insight here from the administration? Well, for obvious reasons, the administration is keeping plans close to the vest. One thing that our governor, the Tennessee governor Bill Lee has said is that the National Guard will act as a force multiplier for local law enforcement on the ground, meaning the Memphis Police and the Shelby County Sheriff's Department. And that's nothing but positive because the Memphis Police Department is like a lot of police departments around the country, several hundred officers short of its full complement. The Shelby County Sheriff's Department is short of its deputies where they should be in terms of the numbers of deputies that they should have on active duty. So Governor Lee says that they will, they, the National Guard, will work in conjunction with local and state law enforcement. We think that that is really good and really positive. I will say that the National Guard is a short-term solution. We saw that in Washington, D.C. I suspect that we'll see that in other parts of the country. We wanna work hard with the administration to get other federal resources here on the ground permanently, like additional FBI agents, assistant, additional assistant U.S. attorneys, other deputy U.S. marshals, so that they can work hand-in-hand with local and state law enforcement. Yeah, very well said. And we'll continue to wait for that plan to be rolled out here. Lastly, I just wanna ask you about Charlie Kirk and what we're seeing right now in Glendale, Arizona today. More than 100,000 people expected to be part of this. There's a live shot there of people filing in and waiting for this to happen. It's gonna happen here at 11 o'clock local time in Arizona, so around two o'clock our time. Just your takeaway, though, the movement that Charlie Kirk put together and the outpour of support for him. Well, first of all, I've been watching the images on Newsmax this morning, and the outpouring of support already to get into that stadium is absolutely incredible. We've heard from people all around my area of West Tennessee, certainly all around the country, just the shock and the grief, but the appreciation of everything that Charlie Kirk stood for. The free debate of speech, whether you agreed with him or whether you disagreed with him, he was always willing to engage, and maybe more importantly, willing to engage in a civil way so that you could have that free exchange of ideas and free debate. So while his murder and his assassination is truly tragic, what he stood for and what he believed is going to live on for a long, long time. Yeah, I agree with you, and it'll be interesting to listen to some of the remarks here from President Trump, Vice President J.D.
