During a Fox News town hall in Georgia, former President Donald Trump described himself as the "father of IVF." This claim was made while addressing an audience predominantly comprised of women. Trump's statement comes in the wake of the Supreme Court's 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which has raised concerns about the future of reproductive rights, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. 

Although Trump's top advisors did not directly comment on his "father of IVF" claim, they asserted that Trump has been a leader for the party on reproductive issues. This includes his support of access to IVF, emphasized earlier in the year when an Alabama Supreme Court decision led to hospitals and clinics in the state temporarily halting IVF treatments.

The topic of IVF has emerged as a significant flashpoint in discussions about women's reproductive rights, intensified by the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision. Trump’s appointment of conservative justices to the Supreme Court has contributed to the national dialogue on abortion and related healthcare services.

A short time ago, we saw former President Trump telling an audience of all women that he is quote, the father of IVF. It's back in the states where they can have the vote of the people. It's exactly where they want to be. Remember this. This issue has torn this country apart for 52 years. So we got it back in the states. We have a vote of the people and it's working its way through the system and ultimately it's going to be the right thing. And IVF, you had mentioned before IVF, let's get this question because I believe that's what this is about. Oh, I want to talk about IVF. I'm the father. You don't hear that every day. I'm the father of IVF. The fertility treatment has of course become a flashpoint in the nationwide clash over abortion and reproductive rights and has come under threat since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Our correspondents are live with us now covering both campaigns. So let's begin with CNN's Elena Treen. Elena, what else did Trump have to say during the Foxtown Hall? Well, Brenna, I do kind of just want to touch on those IVF comments because I do think it was one of the more bizarre moments from last night. Look, when I talked to Donald Trump's top advisors about that comment where he called himself the father of IVF, they didn't respond directly to that exact quote, but they did argue that Donald Trump does believe that he has been a leader on that issue for the party overall, especially given, I mean, remember back in February when the Alabama Supreme Court had ruled essentially that frozen embryos are children, that had led to many hospitals and clinics in the state to pausing access to IVF and IVF treatments. Donald Trump quickly came out and said that he supports IVF and that he thinks people should continue to be able to have access to it. So that is what I was told he was referring to last night. But as you said, and I think we have to be very clear on this, the reason that this is even a topic of discussion right now about questions over whether women can access those treatments is because of the Dobbs decision and because Donald Trump had put conservative Supreme Court justices on the bench.
