The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on a tropical wave spinning in the eastern Atlantic, near Africa and just south of the Cabo Verde Islands. Conditions should become more favorable for gradual development and a tropical depression or storm could develop this week. The next name on the list is Gabrielle. Here’s the latest update.

East Coast of the United States

A tropical wave that recently moved off the coast of Africa, south of the Cabo Verde Islands, is being closely monitored by meteorologists. The system currently has about a 60% chance of developing over the next week, though near-term development remains lower at around 20%. 

Forecast models, including the European and GFS, show different paths and intensities for the system, with the European model predicting a weaker, more southern track and the GFS suggesting a stronger, more northern route. Any potential impact to the United States is estimated to be at least 10 to 12 days away, and the situation will continue to be monitored as the system progresses.

Tropical wave near Africa could develop later this week

We are watching this system that's come off of Africa here, south of the Cabo Verde Islands, which has about a 60% chance of developing over the next seven days, 20% in recent times. But it's got a long way to go, even to get something in 48 hours here. This will probably be our next invest over the next day or so. Here's the European, and the European does kind of fire this up a little bit, which is why you see that 20% area coming up. That's probably in in the next couple of days. But again, this is not a cone. This is a look at, if this were to impact the United States where it is now, we are in the 10 to 12, 12 plus day range in terms of any type of U.S. impacts or landfall, okay? So we got a long time to watch it. That's the point. But let's take a look at it, model this out for you. There you see it, this is the European, all right, bringing it west, bringing it west. Here we are next week. Here's a week from today. A week from today, we're still east of the islands, all right, and then I thought I'd throw the GFS on there, which develops it a little bit faster, okay, and has it farther north. So European's weaker farther south, GFS is stronger and north, and then extending it on, the European even misses the island, but it does start to develop a little bit.
