His meeting with Xi in Tianjin took place five days after the Trump administration imposed punishing 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil. It's a move analysts say has pushed the pair to align against Western pressures. It is the right choice for the two sides to be friends who have good neighborly and amicable ties, partners who enable each other's success, Xi said at the meeting. Modi also spoke of positive developments to the Himalayan border dispute, saying an atmosphere of peace and stability has been created. It's the site of a prolonged military standoff after deadly troop clashes in 2020, which froze most areas of cooperation between the nuclear-armed strategic rivals. The Indian leader said direct flights between the two nations, which have been suspended since 2020, are being resumed, although he did not provide a time frame.
