A flotilla of boats carrying humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza, has set sail from Barcelona. On board are organisers from 44 countries, who say they're trying to break Israel's siege on the Strip.

Hundreds of activists, including climate activist Greta Thunberg and actor Liam Cunningham, have joined the Sumud (Steadfastness) flotilla in an effort to break Israel's maritime blockade of the Gaza Strip. The group, representing 44 countries, departed from Barcelona with the aim of delivering aid and drawing attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where residents face famine and significant hardship.

This marks the third attempt by activists this year to reach Gaza by sea. Thunberg was previously arrested during an earlier mission when Israeli forces intercepted a ship named Handala. Organizers expressed frustration at the lack of international action and hope that the increased number of participants will improve their chances of reaching Gaza safely.

More than 30,000 people signed up to take part in the Sumud, or Steadfastness, flotilla, the third attempt by activists this year to end Israel's maritime blockade of Gaza. As the chosen participants carried out their final preparations for the weeks-long voyage across the Mediterranean, supporters in Barcelona cheered them on. But anger at the international community was all too evident among organizers, including American Hannah Clare Smith. Leaders around the world have failed and as we've watched children buried in the rubble and as we've watched parents and grandparents hold the massacred bodies of their children and their grandchildren, and as we have seen journalists be assassinated for telling the truth, it has just become time for the people to stand up. People from 44 countries are taking part in the mission. Many have already travelled long distances from countries as far away as Argentina. People in Gaza are living through an impossible time, unforgivable. It's hell. It's very, very difficult. There are many dead of all genders and ages. There's hunger. Right now they're suffering from famine. Others include actor Liam Cunningham and climate activist Greta Thunberg. She was arrested in July during a previous attempt to reach Gaza, when Israeli forces stormed a ship called Handala. It was later impounded at an Israeli port. Some of those on board say the experience has done little to shake their resolve. I was in the airport with two airplane tickets, one for California and one for Barcelona. And I had to make a decision and I said, I have to come here. My children will understand. I called them. I said, I have to come here. This time the hundreds of activists are hoping for safety in numbers. More boats will join this fleet in Tunisia next week before they head east. The flotilla's intended destination, Gaza, is certain. But the fate of those on board is not. Bill and Mark Saljezera.
