China’s Xi Jinping has welcomed Russia’s Vladimir Putin, India’s Narendra Modi and leaders from around 20 countries to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, a high-security gathering aimed at boosting Beijing’s influence and promoting "a multipolar world order."

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin has drawn significant attention as Chinese President Xi Jinping hosts Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The gathering highlights closer ties among these leaders, particularly as relations between the United States and India have become strained due to recent US tariff increases.

The SCO, which includes 10 member states and 16 partner or observer countries, promotes principles such as mutual trust and development. While the summit has raised concerns in the West due to growing trade and diplomatic ties among countries like Iran, Russia, Belarus, and China, supporters argue that the SCO is not directed against any particular nation and aims to promote security and cooperation for all members.

Xi aims to show global south unity with Modi and Putin

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization has existed for almost 30 years but it has never gotten this much attention. Not for the quality of its receptions but due to the guests themselves and the timing. Russia's Vladimir Putin and India's Narendra Modi among others have never appeared closer to President Xi Jinping. This comes as massive U.S. tariff hikes have soured relations between Washington and New Delhi. I think some of the statements that we've witnessed coming out of Washington over the last few weeks have again given rise to that sentiment that the United States is an unreliable partner. Meanwhile, China and Russia have worked to appear to their partners as reliable as possible. The SCO has 10 member states. 16 other countries are their partners or observers. Its tenets are mutual trust, benefit, equality, respect, development but seeing the leaders of Iran, Russia and its ally Belarus developing trade diplomatic and eyeing potential defense ties with China among others has brought some concern in the West. Others, including this Iranian professor, have pled in its favor. And the good thing about the SCO is that it's not directed against anyone. No one in the global south is trying to develop a NATO. It is a club where everyone can join and it is a club which promotes security for all. Talks will continue until Monday under high security in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin.

Russia's Vladimir Putin is among a dozen leaders attending the regional security summit, which comes at a crunch moment in talks over his war on Ukraine, and for a summit that's demonstrating a strong show of unity among Global South leaders.
