Voters in Batavia Township have rejected a zoning amendment for a proposed 239-home development and passed a measure to repeal the township's plan development (PD) zoning category. This repeal, supported by over 57% of voters, will require future subdivisions to comply with existing zoning rules, effectively halting new PD developments once the election results are certified.

Despite the vote, the township's Board of Trustees approved two new communities totaling about 1,100 homes, as current regulations remain in effect until certification. Township officials, including the planning and zoning director, noted that the loss of PD zoning could limit housing options for residents. A public hearing on plan development regulations is scheduled for November 13th.

The big major development that's been, you know, in the headlines before the election, the election isn't certified yet, so we're still following the regulations. As is our regulations will be repealed when the election certified. This repeal now opens up the conversation on zoning and population growth in Batavia in a new way. From a planning standpoint, it is an important tool for us to have Taylor Corbett, the townships planning and zoning director, says losing plan developments. This way removes an important tool to accommodate the townships growth. People are just in different stages in their lives. A lot of people are looking to downsize, so they're looking for minimal maintenance. PD's allow for that minimal maintenance, so there's a lot of different products that I think are important, and when you just kind of remove it, it takes away all those options, but a township reopened discussions on plan development regulations in a public hearing next Thursday, November 13th during a zoning commission meeting.
